This story takes place at the Abbey in Yew on the Lake Superior Shard.
Yes, I know this is the Joy of Villany, and at this point, I only play Goody, Goody players, and have never killed, looted, or even attacked another player. I can hear it now. "Why are you writing a stupid story to JoV"? The reason is simple, I wanted to give you a view point from a Victum.
Yes, I was a victum of my own stupidity. One event led to another. I had not been playing the game a long time, and had been PK'ed several times by different people - Cookie Monster was one of them. Anyway, I was (still am) an aspiring Mage, and had been casting spells around the Abbey. I had just cast a fire field (this was before you could no longer resisting in town) and heard the door to the Abbey Open. As soon as I heard the door open, I knew I had screwed up. Here came Ol'Dirty. He walked through the flame field and had me guard killed. I ran to the Sturdy Bow in Yew and got Res'd. I came back and was moaning somewhat about losing my stuff. Well, any way, I was some what pissed. I had asked for my stuff back, and of course did not get it. This guy sees me and says follow him. I said ok, no problem, I had already lost everything I had, and what else could they do to me. I followed him, he explains that he is leaving UO and was going to drop 7 keys around town, and who ever found his house would get it. Well, he said that he saw me and felt sorry for me, and that he decided that he would help me out because it looked like I needed a hand up. Yes I did. Occasionally I still do. I kept the house until my account got
hacked, and they emptied me of everything, and sold my house. The guy who bought it, was a little up set when I confronted him about it. I knew it wasn't his fault, but I wanted him to know who the house belonged to, and asked him who he bought it from. He would not tell me. So a week ago, the house fell apart, and someone got to place a new house.
A couple of months after I got the house, I was at the Abbey dropping off gold in the bank, and was in the guard zone, and had my key to the house stolen. I was headed there to get some regs, and go chop, carve and sell some more bows (I'm still aspiring to be a GM Bowyer 97.0 and holding for a long time), and needed the regs for recall. I notice the key is stolen, I yell guards, none came. I was pissed. So the first thing I did was run to the house. Of course the thief followed me. (this was right after the housing patch) I see him. I
paniced. Period. If I had been more familiar with the housing patch, no problem I wasn't. Anyway, we are both in the house. I forget what all transpired, but he went back to the bank, got a friend. At this time, I ICQ the few people I know to come help me. They are thidk headed, and don't come right off. Anyway, I finally start to fight. Ragnar (The thief) and Pantrax (The Mage) proceed to rip me apart. Ragnar hits me with his poisoned weapon. I recall back to the abby and end up curing the poison, but end up dying anyway. I get ressed and head back to the house. By this time, my friend comes and bring someone with him. They stopped looting the house, and we talk. First Ragnar tells me that I was stupid for running to the house, and asked me why I did not just ban him. Duhh. Didn't remember that I could do that. I didn't get anything back, and lost a lot of good magic armor and weapons and stuff.
I ran into Pantrax out in the woods last week, and we had a nice chat. If he had wanted to kill me he probably could have as I think he is a GM mage by now. I told him that he could probably attack me, and might even be able to kill me, but I would probably be able to recall and get away. He said, he was going to try anything because it was his birthday. I wished him happy birthday, and we parted. I also told him that all he would get off of me besides my GM Halley was about 350 stones worth of heavy x-bows and 3 sets of recall regs and 2 recall
runes. (1.3K for the heavys).
During this time, I was also out chopping trees and carving heavy';s and was strolling through the woods, and I see someone try to recall. He failed (how I don't know as he can summon EV's). Ut oh. It's one of them Red Dudes. I don't run, and he doesn't try to kill me. I forgot what we originally talked about, but it ended up, I carved about 600 arrows or bolts for him, and made a friend. He also gave me about 1000 feathers to take with me. A few days later, I was up around his house, and had gotten killed by a dire wolf (I hate those things) and had come back after getting res'd to get my stuff, when I get killed again (Yes I suck when it comes to combat) and he happened to see me. He killed the wolf, and res'd me. One good turn deserves another. His name was The Golden One.
Since I was PK'ed by Ragnar and Pantrax, I haven't been killed by a PK since. I don't panic any more, and I have come to understand (not like) that it's part of the game. I play a Merchant Bowyer and that's what I do. I am not as easy now as I was then, but still suck at PvP, but am better able to take care of myself (run or recall). I have been attacked since then, many times, and have survived all of them. I have since asked several good PvP'ers to train me, and finally found one who was willing to do so. So I am getting better at PvP. Not good yet, but getting better each day. If you see Warnhack north of Yew in the forrest, and need bows, shafts, arrows, or bolts, and you don't attack him right off, he will help you out if he is able (bows and x-bows are not a problem. He even makes exceptional's).
The moral of these stories is this. Learn from your mistakes. Ragnar and Pantrax tought me several valuable lessons. Learn all you can about how things work and most of all - Don't Panic. I did, I lost a good bit of loot, and I died twice (once because they killed me, and the second time, because Ragnar was perma flagged, I attacked him, and he killed me again - bull headed and stupid to attack someone who just killed you 15 minutes before). I also learned that I needed to make a macro of "GUARDS" and "I ban thee". I learned to hide when I do
my banking. I learned that if your keys get stolen, don't assume that the person knows where your house is ( I assumed that was why he stole my key in the first place) and run directly to your house and stand there. I learned that if you lose your key, go to your house, change locks, run like hell and bank your new key. I learned that as a ghost I could ban people, and all the other stuff. I learned not to let people get close to me unless I know them. I learned not to stand still. For these expensive lessons, I owe a debt of gratitude to Ragnar and Pantrax. From my encounter with the RED guy, I learned that if you see a Red and they do not attack you as soon as they see you, that more than likely they will not. They may just be Red for a number of different reason that just a jerk PK. They may even help you out when you really need it. But most of all, that not all PK'ers are jerks, nor are all Reds PK'ers, and I learned what not
to do after each encounter.
