Loot More? Sure...

This story takes place just outside of Vesper after a long day of looting.

I'm just about to go out for the evening when my looting buddy, Silly Bastard, ICQs me and asks if I want to help him loot a house. There are very few people in UO that would say "no" to this question - I'm not one of them. I grabbed my rogue char, Crum, and went to meet him at the Vesper bank.

Silly Bastard had jacked some guy's keys right in front of his house. We looted it and killed all of the defenders. They were all in the same guild and they were horrible. At one point, they tried to cast Fire Field on one of us, but instead they cast it on a guild member trapped in a corner by us (hidden and looting, of course). They weren't a real challenge. I later found out why.

One of the two remaining guild members was in trouble with both of us filling him with arrow holes when he yelled, "Heal me dad". Oh. My. God. We apparently had decimated a weekend-playing guild-family and looted their house.

Ewww. That left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm too nice of an evil guy, I guess.

Anyhow, the story isn't about that looting. We'd found a rune to another location in that house and we'd gotten everyone's key rings, so we decided to check it out. Well, we didn't find a house for our keys, but we did find stupid people in a house with their door open.

Naturally, we invited ourselves in. By this point in the day (a lot of looting so far), we were seasoned veterans on checking chests for traps quickly. So we pick up all the chests, check them for traps and then start looting. Well, there really wasn't jack shit there. We found 3 magic weapons and some GHs. That was it.

What was funny was that this whole time the THREE people in this little house weren't doing shit about us. They barely acknowledged we were there at all. None of them appeared to be the owner, they were just friends of his and were using his house to spar with the two polar bears he had trapped.

After a while, the owner shows up and attacks us, but he recalls in a hurry. Must be great to have friends that won't risk taking a murder to save your house from being looted.

You would think that loot was a total bust. I know I did. I was wrong.

About 6 hours later (after I got back from my night out in RL) someone named "me the cool" in newbie clothes approaches me at the Vesper bank. Finally, we get to the story I want to tell.

"Hey, did you loot a house earlier?" he asks. "Why?" "Because I wanted to let you know that you missed some magic armor and some greater explosions in the 2nd chest. Come with me and you can help me loot it." Please. I can't believe someone thought I was this stupid. Let me get this straight:

1> A person who wasn't there during the looting is telling me that I missed stuff that I know wasn't in the chests when SB and I were there.
2> This person is in newbie clothing and has a cool newbie name.
3> This newbie has a key to somewhere that I looted and wants to let me back in so I can help him loot it.

I understand that some people are stupid, but this was waaay to obvious of a trap for me to NOT go.

I even said, "Well, it's not a smart trap, but at least it's interesting"

I dropped everything except for some regs, a reg bow and arrows in the bank. If it is a trap and I'm dumb enough to die, at least I won't lose anything.

Well, I follow him just northwest of Vesper and he walks up to that 2nd house we looted and opens the door.

"This place DOES look familiar," I say.

"Here, it's all in this 2nd chest." Riiight. Sure it is. So, I grab the chest and drop it on him. Gee, it doesn't go into a trade window. Wonder what that means...

"It's trapped, fool. You think I don't know how to check for this stuff?" At this point, I'm insulted he thinks I'm a moron.

"No it's not. See? I'm taking stuff out of it."

I have no problem with people trying to kill me because I loot them. It just makes complete sense to defend what you've worked for. But, inviting me back into your house to try to get me to open a chest that is trapped is definitely the pussy to TRY to kill me. I did get a kick out of the fact that he'd made a newbie tinker-trapper to TRY to kill me, but this guy was obviously not gonna cut it.

"Ok child. I was curious as to what type of trap you had set for me at your house, but I was hoping for a bunch of friends hiding or something interesting. I'm losing IQ points just breathing the same air that you are."

I started walking back to Vesper when a newcomer runs past the house and says "wait". I waited hoping for something interesting to happen. The newbie tinker-trapper came out of the house to join this meeting. The newcomer Magic Arrows me and then ebolts. The ebolt does 12 whole hp of damage to me. Without needing a heal, I grab my bow and go to work. This new guy leaves in a hurry halfway into a serious ass-beating (recalled in the middle of a fight - God I hate that).

"me the cool" is still standing there when I decide I'm tired of this shit. I walk over, snoop him and take his house key. "hey!" Awww... =( "Hey man. You wanted me to loot that house. Now, I'll show you what's up." I went back to the house determined to loot it clean. I had no one to open a trade window with, so I couldn't open any chests unless I wanted to test them the hard way. Thankfully since I'd left a lot of stuff in the bank, I was very light on weight and it only took me 5 trips to get the 5 chests (all weighing over 250 stones) back to my house.

I killed the 2 polar bears. I even put the three chests that were trapped or empty on the corpses to decay away.

This is finally how it turned out:

As you can see, there isn't anything left in the house except for the book that I took to share my thoughts with the owners. Here is my rant to them:

Anyone who leaves their door open for two rogues to run in, should plan on being left with nothing. It just makes sense to play smart and protect your stuff. If you're going to kill someone who's looting:

DON'T let your key get stolen
DON'T invite rogues back for round 2
DON'T try if you're hopelessly outclassed
