I will concede that yes, HoN community is:
- much more competitive, so you get lots of nerd rage
- very steep learning curve to start out
But the game has 60 heroes, which means plenty of original Heroes that were not in DotA.
The gameplay more closely resembles DotA so int characters get weaker late games and you need a balanced team to have an agi carry to win late game. I've heard with the items in LoL the int characters continue to get stronger with their abilities making them rediculous late game.
I don't know how match making is ever a positive, there is PSR values to determine how good people in HoN are and you have a host and balance the teams yourself ensuring even teams.
HoN has many gametypes to play:
Banning Draft - a random pool of the heroes is chosen and each team takes turns banning 1 hero at a time until 4 heroes are banned. Then the teams take turns picking so it's not just a rush to grab everything.
Random Draft - a random pool of the heroes is chosen and you take turns picking, same as BD but without the bans. Both this and BD you can see the heroes the other team is picking.
Single Draft - each player gets 3 random heroes to pick from, 1 str, 1 int, 1 agi. You can trade with others on your team as in other modes if you don't like what you get.
All Pick - you just pick any hero, the other team sees what you pick so you can counter pick other heroes if you pick to quick.
I don't know how I feel about the Summoner idea in LoL since I haven't played it yet, but I kinda don't like the idea that there are levels you can't see the others have that effect their ability to own you. With HoN it is all about learning the items for heroes and abilities and how to play as a team, no persistence.
