Default Quantum of Solace

I'm a big fan of Bond movies. Nothing like some over the top spy action right? But I have to say the new movies they have been putting out just aren't living up to the classics in the series.

There is a ton of action as usual and a decent plot also. The 2 things missing from the newer movies is a truly sinister and bizarre villain and a lack of cool hi tech gear. I'm talking about laser watches and other sweet shit that bond used to always deploy. Cars that were armed to the frame and remote controlled. The last couple of movies have lacked things like that. They have been a bit more realistic in that aspect but that was one of the things that made James Bond what it was.

The villains in the last couple movies were also lacking. They were ordinary guys for the most part. I mean what happened to weirdos like Jaws?

Still the movie was pretty badass with enough action and a deep enough plot to be well worth watching. I just couldn't help but notice the lacking elements.

I'm behind on my Bond.

Now that I've got more time on my hands these days, I'm going to snag myself the entire series and watch 'em from start to finish.

My wife and I kind of got a treat on our honeymoon though. We got to stay in the hotel where they shot Casino Royale, in Paris.

Thought that was kind of cool. But I digress.

I think what you're seeing is the decline of actual storytelling and acting that has become sort of a secondary to flashy effects and action. The older bond movies have more dialogue, more character development, and more depth. The newer bond films, starting with Pierce Brosnan, have more action, explosions and effects whereas the actual storytelling, character development and overall plot is lacking.

Not that I really mind it, honestly. But you miss out on new and more interesting villians.

I thought Goldeneye was the last good bond movie. Maybe it's just because I was so into the N64 console game, but that movie seemed like it had it all. Laser watches, remote control cars, good plot, and decent villains. I've been thoroughly disappointed with the last few movies.

And that is precisely what I was getting at. Goldeneye was one of the films I had in mind when I thought about how the new movies lacked what the old ones had.

Laser watches and all kinda high tech gadgets you would expect a spy to have and a good reason to use them at key points during the movie as the sinister plans of the over the top villain unfold.

But the new movies are still well worth watching simply for all the action and effects.
