Default There Will Be Blood

Well there sure as shit should have been blood. Pouring out of the head of whatever executive thought this was a good idea. Where do I start? Well, have you ever had novocaine wear off while a dentist is bouncing a diamond tipped drill bit off the enamel of a tooth to cave it in for a filling? Whelp, that is far less painful than both watching this movie, and trying to determine what someone at Paramount was thinking when they decided it would actually be a good idea to put this train wreck on film.

Basically the storyline is as follows; An eccentric prospector in turn of the century America is approached by a struggling landowner in Little Boston, CA who says there is oil on his property. (Sounds like a great fucking idea for a movie doesn't it?) He wants Daniel, the prospector, to buy his land and extract the oil while giving the landowner's brother, a sanctimonious self ordained prophet at the helm of a middle of nowhere backwards ass Simple Baptist church and his congregation who live on the property employment. Daniel takes advantage of this landowner and buys it cheap. Early in the film Daniel winds up adopting the orphaned infant son of one of his oil workers who is killed on the rig early on, taking him on as his own. He does this, however, as he explains towards the end of the film, because he needed an innocent face to exploit in order to help him con the surrounding land owners into selling their property cheap. As the movie progresses we watch the overtly distrustful and seemingly wicked Daniel progress into madness through his irrational and unfounded hatred of people. The end of this inane movie, an excruciating 2 hours and 45 minutes from the first credit, is as bizarre and pointless as the movie itself.

So whats the central message of the film? I guess it's that there are evil rich people in the world that will do whatever it takes to get wealthy and stay there. And that there are weird religious nuts that take their ideology to a bizarre level. Hey, thanks for the insight Hollywood. I never knew. Does the sun also rise and set every 24 hours?

In the sardonic words of Delroy Lindo's character in Get Shorty, "I've seen better film on teeth."

In case you are wondering (and I'm sure you are) why on earth I even watched this movie? Well like most things a friend made me do it...

Fail.

I haven't seen this movie, but this is the very FIRST bad review I've heard.

While my review may be less than glowing and somewhat one sided I will say this about the film to be fair.

The screenplay wasn't terrible, I have obviously seen much MUCH worse *cough* Eyes Wide Shut *cough*, just very booooring. It didn't do a fantastic job getting me to really like or ultimately hate any of the characters, including Daniel. I found the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic and thus found the movie to be disappointing overall. Frankly, it is about 45 minutes to long.

Daniel Day-Lewis, the only headliner in the film, does an absolutely fantastic job with the screenplay as one would expect. I mean The Last of the Mohicans still moves me when I watch it. Fantastic actor, fantastic job.

Other than that, just a dull, slow movie. I went into it knowing that it won lots of awards. The fact that it won awards did it have anything to do with my wanting to see it. Lets be honest, the Academy and their lets-pat-each-other-on-the-back-for-making-pretend award show doesn't inspire me to either watch a movie or not. But none the less I expected, well, better. I guess given the overall inane storyline the actors and the crew did what they could. This is one of those films that should have remained a book. I'm sure the book is much better.

I would say see it for sure and tell me what you think. I would love to get another opinion on it. I just want my 2 hours and 45 minutes back.

I personally loved the movie, I'm not going to write a detailed review of it. But Daniel-Day Lewis, is a superb actor. Just look at his role in Gangs of New York, his performance in there will be blood was even better. I hope to see another dark/realistic/gritty movie from him.
