Default WTFMan : Private servers and you

Ok, there's been some talk of doing a GTA server or Counterstrike with the WTFMan name on it. As you can probably tell, we have been involved in a few different private server endeavors (IPY, WTFGTA, Divinity, etc). Please keep in mind that the common thread between each of them is that one of the WTFMen from the site has taken on at least some level of responsibility toward the project.

That is what causes our name to be affiliated. I know some guys were talking about doing coding for a GTA server and willing to let us carry on the WTFGTA thing, but without one of us onboard... it would be silly to have our name on it. Divinity is as close as we've come to backing something without having someone activity in a lead position on the server and 1> I am an admin whether I am active in that and 2> it doesn't have our name on it.

I don't know what Risks, cr0ss or Joe are interested in as far as taking the lead on something. I'm pretty sure Joe and I are in the same boat which is "I barely have time to play again, let alone lead one".

I dunno. There is the possibility of bringing someone on to act as a lead for a side project and I'm not totally against it, but it definitely would be a first and feels weird to me to do. I suppose that if there is enough player interest for such a thing and someone competent stepped up and impressed me enough, I guess that would make sense. Still strange to me though.

Maybe that's what the site needs though. I'm still hopeful that since AoC is quite a decent game with a FFA PVP atmosphere that it'll generate more posts/traffic, but it probably won't do shit compared to a WTFMan server of some type. Hell, IPY overnight brought in thousands of hits a day.

*shrugs*

Thoughts?

Hosting whatever we want is no problem. I don't mind hosting anything... but I definately see what you're saying NH - someone has to take the responsiblity of being the 'lead wtfman' on it.

What do you want to do?

Is there a possibility of the server running both? My vote is still for the CS server. I would be more then happy to be an admin on it BUT, that will not be possible until Mid July. I'm not even sure what you really think about a non-wtfman doing this? I can tell you that if you put up a Counterstrike server you would see me in it daily. I think you would have to revamp the site a bit to support statistics for the server etc. Also, the thing about a counterstrike server is you will have multiple different people coming in and out and its a HELL OF A LOT easier to maintane the server (less coding etc..) All you would really need is multiple Admins for the server that would play regularly to kick hackers/newbs etc... Another way to look at is is possibly having a WTFMan Clan that could compete in tournys and get the name out there even more. I just see Counterstrike as an easier server to host and also a server that would get continuous hits from all over the world.

I know people love GTA but why bother with such a headache of a game? With GTA you have to worry about people telling their friends to come play the game as opposed to hitting the search button and having the WTFMan server randomly pop up. So lets hear it GTA fans, why should there be a GTA server rather then a CS server?

The biggest draw for the old wtfgta was searches, both on the server lists and through here. though there was some word of mouth joiners, there was alot more people who just came and loved the community.

Also, a GTA server isnt just a shoot-em-up game, its like a LARP thats alot more fun, where you play a cop or a gang member or a National Guardsman or w/e

Well, since Risks, cr0ss and Joe haven't said a word, I'm guessing either they have given up on wtfman.com or they are too busy to do shit for it.

Personally, I won't be leading any side projects, so I guess that effectively kills that.

I really can't play enough to spearhead anything at the moment. I'd love to say I'm 100% all over running a CS server or some such but I haven't really been able to play any games that much lately.

Yeh, We were discussing it with a few people in the IRC, but you mentioned that. Ryan was all for hosting it, but we never went any further then that. You said you'd put the word in on the private forums for us.

It's fine though, no hurry for anything.
