Default Online Games Some Thoughts...

So this thread is I guess more to provoke thought and get some different opinions on the different types of online games. I will start it off with my own experiences and opinions but I want to hear what some of the rest of you think.

For me it all began back when UO hit store shelves that started my online gaming experience and at the time set a few standards for me. But Prior to UO I had been playing U8 everyday for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. Yeah that may seem like a long time to play a standard RPG but we all know what the Ultima universe is about. Freedom and the only limit is your own creativity. So since I was big into the Ultima series naturally I moved right into UO and immediately loved it. That only lasted about a year because after the first year maby of the patches they released only hurt the game. Again anyone familiar with UO knows the whole sad story. I continued to play it for another ten years purely out of general addiction. What a mistake...

I am currently enjoying the shit out of COD 4 and 5 and looking forward to 6. Now here is where I bring in the opinion end of this.

You see I always had thought in my mind that a FPS game would be ultimately frustrating above and beyond any other type of online game. I could not have been more wrong about that and this is why.

You see in UO I would get rather upset (what an understatement) why would I get so upset over a game? Does it not sound kinda silly but it isn't. The reason it isn't is because I never got all that upset to begin with. Sure I got pissed but not to the point I was freaking out. Not initially. It always escalated to that point like a slow boil.

I would die or my guild mates would be fucking off like retards and I would start to get pissed off. Now that was only the beginning because by that point I was ready to log and take a break. Oh no you cannot simply take a break from this type of game. You see there is always the matter of recovering your body as you get rez killed and fucked over further by a retarded guildy. This always goes on for a minimum of 20 more minutes some times even leading to over an hour of additional frustration. Yeah I pulled one of those classic angry gamer moments thrashing my keyboard to dust on several occasions due to the fact that all I really wanted was to get the fuck out of the game and cool down. Unfortunately I felt somewhat obligated to remain logged in and finish things up before closing the game. Again a mistake on my part.

So the point here is that unless your totally mellow by nature an MMORPG is going to be pretty frustrating at times. It was for me and after many years of it I began to get pretty turned off by the thought of another MMORPG experience.

That ended an era of online gaming for me. MMORPGs are completely out of the question for me ever since.

Now onto the new age of online gaming for me. FPS games! No more am I frustrated by a game. Why? Because when I connect to a server I play for as long as I feel like playing then I simply close the game when I have had enough. Getting shot all to hell and irritated at the fact some asshat is pwning the ever loving shit out of me? Just close the game out and come back later. It's a wonderful thing. Not to mention that the idea of a FPS game in and of it's self is awesome. Who wouldn't relieve a ton of built up anger, frustration, and tension by gunning down everyone in sight eh?

So needless to say I think the FPS games will be in my future for a long while. And even better they literally require almost no time dedication to play them. You can log in for as little as 5 minutes or as long as 12 hours and have just as much fun each time.

I am looking forward to Diablo III however unlike the MMORPGs Diablo has always been a kinda co-op RPG deal so it is usually pretty fun. I also like the fact it can be played offline if you feel like just playing the game without any of the online shit getting in the way.

Outside of those types of games I can't really say much I tend to find something I like and stick with it for a long time.

What about the rest of you? What types of games have you played and what kind of experiences have you had?

good post sir glad to see a newcomer with new stuff..
Its a good think you dont try Darkfall then.. First person shooter with UO ruleset might pull you in harder than a whore on prom night. Especially since DF has released a very stable set of new clusters to handle lag and queues making them nearly a thing of the past. Also is www.mortalonline.com which just recently opened up beta apps and a new trailer. Which looks amazingly similar to oblivion.
I have plenty of stories from UO and Battlefield 2.. My xfire would show 1500 hours logged in BF 2 and 1100 in UO.. I didnt use it much when playing UO so thats a very low actual number. But for now I am playing CoD 5 on the pc and Darkfall. I have tons of xbox games and you will find that community especially healthy from these forums. Have fun man. I will post stories later.

Yeah be sure to. I don't know about you but I think COD 5 is pretty phenomenal for a FPS game. And you just can't beat the sound of getting a headshot lol.

Do you play COD from your xbox of PC?

I'm the exact opposite of you Corpsecrank. For me regular FPS game are just not that fun anymore. Even Left 4 Dead is boring for me. Maybe it comes from too many years playing Counterstrike and managing a top3 clan in my country for almost 3 years. Now I'd rather watch Warcraft 3 matches than a CS match.

MMO's are for me a way to just sit down an relax and that includes playing Darkfall as well. Sure, the game can be brutal at times but I'm running with a very tight group who has got it shit together 99% of the time and I'm having an absolute blast. DF is the only game since UO that has been able to give me an adrenaline kick from playing and that feeling is just priceless. When you're heart is beating away and you're completely focused on the game it doesn't get much better than that - at least not for me.

I'll definately stick with DF for a long time unless they slowly kill and go softcore UO style on it. I can't imagine that at all tho as the game seems to thrive more than ever now with upgraded server clusters and all as Judas pointed out. That game is the fucking tits imo.

I really considered checking DF out but like I said UO really left me with a nasty taste in my mouth. But if you have a decent group it really makes all the difference in the world. I know I used to actually have some fun when I was in some of the better guilds in UO.

I can also understand the FPS scene getting old especially if you really hit them hard. I love the fact I can jump from game to game and change the scenery and weapon selection though. I play a variety which is probably why I haven't worn it out yet. I really got bored with MOHAA and needed much more out of a game than what it offered. Once I picked up COD 4 and 5 and started swapping back and fourth between them I was having fun again. I just wish they would do something new with the series like a hardcore WWI version or something that would really kick ass cuz WWI was grimy as fuck.
