Default My new God PC I built and purchased yesterday: Review it, critique it!

first for an ice breaker: Sony releases its newest piece of shit you don't need but bought it anyways.

Ok back? Hope you a chuckle or two.. If not, are you alive? that was funny..
k so I built and purchased my god PC from 3 sources: Amazon amazingly has some of the cheapest components for PCs than any other site: Newegg, tigerdirect, buy.com, surprised? me too. Anyways:

From ThermalTake: Case is a sexy beast of a thing awesomely, Thermaltake sells refurbished cases. I got this one at a steal at 129 I mean look at this beast
Armor+ ESA Edition VH6001BWS It can fit any mobo, micro, full atx, extended atx, and ssi ceb. lots of bays amazing reviews sold.

From amazon: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz 8M L3 Cache 4.8GT/sec QPI Hyper-Threading Turbo Boost LGA1366 Processor Cheapest on web $269 sold. I have nothing to say. yah its entry level, yah it can be tricky getting the wattage and overclocking on this ( if i wanted to oc) but its a beast and it out performs damn near anything except the higher i7 iterations.

Mobo = EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 3-Way SLI Core i7 Motherboard with Tri-Channel DDR3 and Tuning Utility I have heard nothing but awesome things about this board. Its E-LEET tuning ability for OC is really great and the board itself is pretty future proof for at least a year I hope. ( stupid moores law ) Time will tell, $294

From newegg:

Power supply: CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
2008 Best Power Supply Manufacturer by Custom PC $114 after 25 dollar rebate single rail.. Sold.

ram: OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail yes i know its not teh fastest! guess what i dont care.. Tom's hardware says that comparable difference between the same amount of ram upgraded to pc3 12000 is so minute it cannot begin to justify the 100 price difference plus: $65.99 after 60 dollar rebate.. Eat it.

vid card: BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024OCE GeForce GTX 280 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
Free Call of Duty: World at War w/ purchase, after an additional promo code I got this card for $289 with call of duty 5.. Its bfg tech so i know its great. Does ati have PhysX? no.. 3d support? no.. I don't see any cons.. its a beast, its 289 with call of duty 5 for free. sold

gaming HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive (bare drive) - OEM
Customer Choice Award1x Winner of Customer Choice Award - Internal Hard Drives price is what basically this came down too. 150 gb for games and windows only I dont expect to fill up too quickly at least within a year. I had looked at solid state drives then I realized 400 dollars for a 80 gig hard drive was retarded. Maybe in a year or two. Anywho 159 after 20 dollar mail in rebate. Sold.

storage HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $119 no comment.

also bought a 24 dollar 20x pioneer super burner and thats about it. no blu ray.
things I already have and dont plan on updating:
Keyboard: Merc Stealth backlit gaming keyboard with zboard built on amazing keyboard. huge and heavy but amazing highly recommended.
mouse logitech vx revolution: yah g5 razer blah blah blah.. i know but to be honest i cant tell a difference at all in DPI and all that other shit.. its an amazing mouse
speakers: Klipsch promedia 5.1 thx till they blow up never going to replace and even then i will probably have them repaired lol
monitor: I have a beast 22 inch sony trinitron crt 150 pounder. It has the best color definition and blacks of all time and until it blows up I wont be getting another monitor.
2 external dvd burners and a 1tb external drive.

so what yah think?

You have similar specs to mine. I have a Rampage II Extreme board, 2 8800GTXs, a pair of Seagate 1TB drives in RAID 1. and a WD 750GB drive.

You will not be disappointed in it that's for sure. It will kick the ass out of about any game you throw at it!

I'm right there with you on the CPU. It is entry level but kicks ass, and chips for that chipset can only get better. I have gotten mine up to about 3.5ghz with the Intel cooler. Its not overclocked right now because the bus and chip run full speed constantly when over clocked and wont throttle itself. Idle temp went from 39 to 62 degrees celcius!

I was going to run a 3rd card but two cards run so hot and tri doesnt make enough difference to justify it. Right now my top card runs about 150-160 degrees F in SLI mode running Empire:TW and has been causing lockups. I even had to underclock my cards about 10mhz and turn some thing off in the options to get it to run for more than 30 minutes.

i also heard that you can safely OC the 2.66 to fucking 4.0 safely as long as you keep it cool. is that true? thats amazing if so.

You could try submerging your investment in mineral oil like these idiots:

I have absolutely no idea how well that would work and it looks messy as all hell.

It's likely that a good liquid cooling system would dissipate heat faster than mineral oil would, anyway.

Just be careful if using a Core i7 with DDR3 because DDR3 ram running with a voltage over 1.6 or 1.65 (can't remember exact voltage) can and will damage that processor. Aside from that the system you built is pretty beefy.

I run a decent rig myself that I am currently looking to upgrade again already. Seems I can never have enough power behind my machine lol.

Currently I run a Phenom II X4 940 with 4gb of Kingston HyperX 1066 on a motherboard I hate the ECS Black Series A790GXM-A with dual Raptor X 150gb drives in it. For sound and video I am running a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatal1ty and a Sapphire 1950GT 512Mb

I will tell you this though stay the fuck away from those ECS motherboards they are fucking garbage end of story. The last board I had we built 5 systems all running the same model board from ECS and all 5 failed. This board not only had one bad ethernet onboard but both failed immediately. If I shut the machine completely down I have to clear the BIOS to get the damned thing to work again. Oh and it's also the worst board on the market for overclocking.

When I upgrade I am getting a Gigabyte AM3 socket board one of the ones with 2oz of copper in the pcb and all that jazz and I am tossing a new AM3 Phenom on it with 4gb of OCZ Reaper X DDR3 1333. We will see how that works out. I just want to wait until the AM3 socket Phenoms have a 3.0Ghz or higher black edition out to upgrade. Think I will also try out one of those dual GPU graphics cards with Crossfire X since the old 1950GT is starting to get a little outdated.
