Default Your UO Adventures. . .

I was just sittin' back relaxing on this Saturday afternoon and started reminiscing about good ol' UO. I played from about '97-'03 and have so many awesome memories. I remember finding WTFMan.com when it was the original three sites (UOEvil.com?) and reading about all these good stories. Just thought it would be fun to read about all of your stories, wether they are about pvp, exploits, crafting, etc.

It was X-mas 1997 and I had just got my first PC (had Apples back in the day, but only consoles to game with). I was 13 and just discovered the world of PC gaming along with the internet. My Mom and I were in Electronics Boutique a few months prior because I was looking for Lords of the Realm 2. I saw this sweet fantasy looking game in PC Gaming? I've never heard of a game where you could play with thousands of other people so I begged my Mom to get it for X-mas. Low and behold, on that wintry morning I had Ultima Online.

After the morning festivities I called my friends and said I wouldn't be going to Plattekill (the ski center in our upstate NY town) because I had just gotten the sweetest fucking game ever. I set everything up and rolled a char on Catskills server (I lived in the Catskill mountains, but somehow pinged horrible to this server). I had never played a game like this and as silly as it may sound, had no idea the loads of information the internet had on it.

I distinctly remember not knowing how to do anything except interact with simple objects and run around. That entire first day consisted of me running around the woods of Minoc getting destroyed by great harts. I couldn't figure out how to really do anything and the manual didn't help much. Needless to say I just said "Fuck this shit" and threw the box across the room and let the game sit, untouched for the next month.

One night I had just gotten home from a friend's house and was snooping around looking for porn and whatever else may attract my attention. I came across a site called UOEvil.com (now WTFMan.com) and a whole new world was opened to me. There were loads and loads of information and this cool new thing called a forum As I mentioned before I had never encountered any of this stuff before.

So, I decided to study, study and study in an attempt to stage my UO comeback. I started training a hally mage and made some friends in Minoc. One of these nights me friend said "OK, now we are going to goto Vesper and get you some good equipment" A new city eh? This sounded pretty fuckin' sweet because I had never been to a diff UO city in the couple days I had been playing. I remember running through the woods, fear and excitement building. A couple of Dread Lords decided to chase us and somehow we managed to get to the guard zone at the West bridge. My hands were little wet from the sweat and my heart was racing (no game since has given me that feeling). As we walked towards the bank the music of Vesper started playing and my screens exploded with what seemed hundreds of player names. There were so many different types of people doing hundreds of different things. . . it blew my mind. Instantly it hit me; this was what made online gaming so amazing. It was that sense of being in a real, living community filled with infinite possibility. From that point on I was hooked. I eventually found a good group of people on Great Lakes (Elric, Mad Martigan, Cromwell, Widow Maker, and Smithy). These dudes showed me beautiful world of PKing in Covetous. I've talked long enough, but jsut wanted to express my first MMO experience and sincerely hope DF can produce even 1/2 of that.

I am looking forward to all of your amazing experiences.

two biggest scams i ever pulled off were the "Hold the check in your cursor then Alt F4 to dupe it". The motherload was when i said i would work a guildies account for them. Mind you this was Alyssa Donovan we were in "The Empire of the Fallen Lords" on Pacific. So this bitch was loaded. I literally caused a server revert so she could get all her stuff back. How is this possible? Our GM at the time "Dracus" was a former employee of EA and just made a phone call. I didnt get to keep shit and was KOS from then on but, I eventually created my own guild dedicated to pissing off zerg guilds like FL.

I never did scams really other then tank thiefing. My friend made a couple hundred thou with the old bag trick with ranger armor sets though. I got scammed once too...like WAY way after the golden days I was playing on Siege and sold some time gift thingy and the fucker put one too few 0's. Didn't even look...course I never spent even half that money so it didn't really matter. Pissed me off though.

EDIT- Finally read OP post (I was watching tv and interneting so was lazy) and I have to say I wish my experiance was like that...almost.

I had been following the game since before the alpha. I was about 12-13-14? and got into the beta because of a guild friend (We had guilds before the game came out...hundreds strong) in Germany (ONYX!) sent me a burned beta disc and I somehow got an account from someone in the guild too (The guild was The Band, we started on Atlantic..I think). So I already knew pretty much everything. I had read all the alpha/beta stories and was fucking PSYCHED TO HELL. Got in the game....it was...dude my heart flutters still..how fucked up is that? I mean it's a game...but it was something more..it was fucking perfect. I remember the first char I finally got past 60 str...mining..he was my smith. Snall Trippin (Named him after I took acid for the first time)...so he became my PK...and thus was born many a Snall Trippin on many a game...god bless it. The pks and blue wars are despise...7 pks casting friggin LIGHTNING...and having it ROCK people...trigger happy bastards killing allies when they came in the dungeon...man..fucking MISS IT. RIP.

Default So fun

I had many many many fun times but just one of them to mention...

While getting ready to go out to the bars at night me and a friend would both make a dude to trap chest and by the time we got back he would be strong enough to kill people with his trapped chest. Of course we'd have beer and sit around for a few hours drinking and watching full plated fools walk up and open our chest and BOOM we'd reap in the rewards. The anticipation was so dam funny sitting there all hidden.

Link to my old UO stories on the old JoV page.

Man, I wish I'd taken more screenshots. Just so many good times didn't get appropriately captured.

So true about the screenshots.... I wish I had mine but I've changed computers 4 times since then.

Well, I remember the first time I saw the world of Ultima Online. I had not yet owned a computer and had only been on the internet a dozen times before that. It was about 1997 and I was at a friends house.

We fucked around at the Cove Orc fort always because that was intense. Well, this was the first place we ever really fought back against PK's so this was the big memory for me. So, a group of about 6 of us got owned by two guys who knew the exploits of the game already.

This was before the patch that created insta-hits so a guy with a katana was owning me on my Aol dialup 28.8k connection by dodging my slow halberd swings. When I swung the Halberd back he would run off and my swing would wifff. I got owned.

The other 5 guys got owned by a thief who managed to take them all down 1 by 1 from bandaging while hidden. He would just wack at one of my mates then run and hide to appear fully healed and of course we didn't have healing skills just kept food on us.

He must have laughed his ass off as they surrounded the spot he was hiding screaming "here he is" "block him in!!!" he was dancing around us. His name was Midget on Great Lakes I still remember that fuckers name.

It was about a 4 minute battle but that was my firstattempt at standing my ground against a griefers. I lost an hour of loot and my magic plate helm. After that battle I remade a new characters and learned how much adrenaline I could get from PvP and this was the sensation that made me give up consoles for 10 years and sadly no other game I played since gave me adrenaline so here I am back on consoles and trying desperatley to get that nostalgia back.

we ultima onliners should just feel lucky we got to experience that.

i doubt anything in the future will be able to replicate it.

kind of like rock and roll in the sixties. stuff like that.. will never be the same again.
