Your UO Adventures. . .
I was just sittin' back relaxing on this Saturday afternoon and started reminiscing about good ol' UO. I played from about '97-'03 and have so many awesome memories. I remember finding WTFMan.com when it was the original three sites (UOEvil.com?) and reading about all these good stories. Just thought it would be fun to read about all of your stories, wether they are about pvp, exploits, crafting, etc.
It was X-mas 1997 and I had just got my first PC (had Apples back in the day, but only consoles to game with). I was 13 and just discovered the world of PC gaming along with the internet. My Mom and I were in Electronics Boutique a few months prior because I was looking for Lords of the Realm 2. I saw this sweet fantasy looking game in PC Gaming? I've never heard of a game where you could play with thousands of other people so I begged my Mom to get it for X-mas. Low and behold, on that wintry morning I had Ultima Online.
After the morning festivities I called my friends and said I wouldn't be going to Plattekill (the ski center in our upstate NY town) because I had just gotten the sweetest fucking game ever. I set everything up and rolled a char on Catskills server (I lived in the Catskill mountains, but somehow pinged horrible to this server). I had never played a game like this and as silly as it may sound, had no idea the loads of information the internet had on it.
I distinctly remember not knowing how to do anything except interact with simple objects and run around. That entire first day consisted of me running around the woods of Minoc getting destroyed by great harts. I couldn't figure out how to really do anything and the manual didn't help much. Needless to say I just said "Fuck this shit" and threw the box across the room and let the game sit, untouched for the next month.
One night I had just gotten home from a friend's house and was snooping around looking for porn and whatever else may attract my attention. I came across a site called UOEvil.com (now WTFMan.com) and a whole new world was opened to me. There were loads and loads of information and this cool new thing called a forum As I mentioned before I had never encountered any of this stuff before.
So, I decided to study, study and study in an attempt to stage my UO comeback. I started training a hally mage and made some friends in Minoc. One of these nights me friend said "OK, now we are going to goto Vesper and get you some good equipment" A new city eh? This sounded pretty fuckin' sweet because I had never been to a diff UO city in the couple days I had been playing. I remember running through the woods, fear and excitement building. A couple of Dread Lords decided to chase us and somehow we managed to get to the guard zone at the West bridge. My hands were little wet from the sweat and my heart was racing (no game since has given me that feeling). As we walked towards the bank the music of Vesper started playing and my screens exploded with what seemed hundreds of player names. There were so many different types of people doing hundreds of different things. . . it blew my mind. Instantly it hit me; this was what made online gaming so amazing. It was that sense of being in a real, living community filled with infinite possibility. From that point on I was hooked. I eventually found a good group of people on Great Lakes (Elric, Mad Martigan, Cromwell, Widow Maker, and Smithy). These dudes showed me beautiful world of PKing in Covetous. I've talked long enough, but jsut wanted to express my first MMO experience and sincerely hope DF can produce even 1/2 of that.
I am looking forward to all of your amazing experiences.
