Default It Begins...

So I got into this whole Age of Conan hype back in beta and I was really excited to try a new game. I downloaded the huge client, installed and patched, but then found out my computer wasn’t able to handle it. It took me precisely 5 minutes to load into the “create a new character” screen – only to find out that it was going to stutter worse than an anxious geek on prom night.

Read the rest on the front page.

Anyone else have similar experiences at first? What'd you do to overcome it? Does the game really get better later on? Am I too much of a whiny bitch these days?

Side note:

The AoC forums have some good posts on improving performance with specific video cards and which settings have the highest render costs. Check it out.

Hopefully that has some answers.

About 2 weeks ago I was sitting at my computer with my hand out the mouse and the cursor over the "add to cart" button. I thought to myself, why waist your time getting into another MMO thats going to cost your almost $20 a month that your going to only play for about 2 months? So, i closed the tab and went about my business. I know everyone is hyped for this but really, its like Ryan posted on the divinity forums about how nothing is ever going to compare to everyones first experiences of playing UO. I'm honestly glad to hear the game isn't what you expected and that I'm not really missing out on much. So for now I will continue to build my empire on divinity and wait for everyone to return.

I have yet to buy it, but I'm hopefully going to use a friend's free trial to at least get a taste of the game. I honestly contemplated about reactivating my AC account, although I'm sure more people left Darktide since AoC was released.

Uh...please tell me you're playing a PvP server. That will certainly change your impression if you are not.

Oh I totally am. I'm running on Deathwhisper (PvP) with some friends. But where can I go PvP? I haven't been able to attack anyone on this newbie island.

I'm on a VERY old rig (like 3½ years old) set up with P3 3ghz, 1gb ram, Geforce 6600gt 128mb and the game is running amazingy well - all detail set to low, though. I was actually surprised to see the game even being able to start up and let me login.

I do have to add that I'm a big tweak geek so everything in my system, ram, cpu and gfx is overclocked and being pushed to the edge in regards to performance. It's clear that I will have to upgrade in order for me to fully enjoy this game but so far I am having a good time.

I can recommend the Priest of Mistra class or whatever it's called. It's pretty badass being able to cast nukes, do melee and heal all at the same time and not feeling like a gimped jack of all trades kinda guy like a pre-BC druid in WoW.

I'm playing on Deathwhisper server. Char name is Hardcorey. Give me a shout if you're also on that server.

I was kind of put off by the game at first as well...but as you said, it's supposed to get way better after level 20. That and I haven't even tried pvp outside of a few quick CTF's during beta.
