Who can blame EA for wanting to make money? Sure they fucked up UO but the results were more subscribers and just recently a 10th year anniversary. That is an impressive accomplishment no matter how you look at it.
Valve did the same thing with CS. They bought the rights, made the game horribly slow compared to older versions and developed CS: Source a couple years later (utter crap game imo), which the hardcore and esport communities hated them for. However, with each new version facts are that more people bought the game and started playing and that's info I have directly from Valve's own Mike Dunkle (I was in charge of cyber cafe licensing in all of Scandinavia and Switzerland a couple years back).
All this is also why I personally think that a game like early UO and even Darkfall won't have much success. The business model simply doesn't add up in the end as the masses will not play a game were they have to struggle so much to get that "yay-succes!!" feeling that other MMO's offer its players. Real life is enough grief for a lot of people. Why would they pay money each month to get griefed online as well?

exactly why all of our hopes and dreams of having that "always look over your shoulder" gameplay we all love will never last. It may return, as in darkfall, but like hytek says humanity has enough grief irl.
As much as I would love to think Darkfall will revolutionize the industry, it seems like its only popular on malicious asshole message boards like this one. I want to play it so bad though.
