Default Spore leaked... why buy?

So, EA/Maxis includes the worlds most hated anti-piracy/copyright protection software that currently exists..

For those who haven't heard, it forces the consumer to activate the cdkey via interwebs before you can launch the game.. and you need to do that just once per installation, but if you need to reinstall (did upgrades, or new os) or want to put it on your laptop after the 3rd installation you gotta go buy a new copy.

The game also leaked in Australia on Sept 1. What is the incentive to actually buy the game when they install protection software that only fucks the people who legitimately buy the game? Or did I read incorrectly as to how their protection software works?

I was considering actually buying the game until I heard about this.

What you didn't read is that after the 3rd installation if you call Spore Tech Support they will issue you a new key, you don't have to go buy a new copy. Quit being retarded.

For the VAST majority of people 3 installations is MORE than they will ever need. If you have to format your machine more than 3 times over the life of a single player video game then maybe you should learn to surf better or buy a fucking firewall or get a virus scanner or something.

I for one am really looking forward to this game, I paid off my preorder of the Galactic Edition yesterday.

I've read multiple things, most of them involving Mass Effect. One of my buddies had installed the game, beaten it. Installed it on his laptop, Then he upgraded his CPU,RAM,MoBo and Video Card wanted to see how it ran, then formatted to install 64 bit vista.. he called tech support and they gave him a ridiculous time about getting another key..

He got another key, but the point is he shouldn't have had to deal with tech support at all, being a legit customer. It's dumb.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly, but the fact of the matter is Software Piracy is a real fucking problem.

They have to do something to combat it, or cool games like this one won't continue to get made.

The game's been leaked and pirated and cracked before retail date. My non-techie girlfriend and her 5 roommates were playing this on their school-grade laptops last night.

How has this combated piracy? The only way I can see is the fact that you can't go online and download other people's creatures. That's the only incentive for me to buy it (and I will because of that) - the dumb CD key install crap is just a nuisance that will piss off real customers, not affect piracy.

Now about the leak. Honestly Id rather pay for my games. But considering the massive DRM bullshit they've been trying to stuff down our throats.

I'm willing to turn a blind eye to all who download it. Though massive pirating of the game will probably just make them use even worse tactics. Because the publisher isn't in the video game business to make great games. Their in it to make as much money as possible.

Honestly, why don't the do something like Valve did with Steam. It's not like any computers are unhooked from the internet but from what it sounds like you're saying you can't even install it without an internet connection to verify the cd-key?

Also, people that are constantly upgrading and real tech-oriented tend to reformat a lot. Hell, my one friend (Lebowski knows who) probably formats once a month or more. It used to be really funny to us because we would always keep trying to get him to start back up in AC a long time ago but he'd always end up responding that he didn't have it installed because he reformatted.
