I’m going to be blunt: I am so bored with all the MMORPG’s out there right now. There just isn’t anything unique, eye-catching or mesmerizing in any of these games currently. So looking to the horizon, we have Warhammer Online coming out next month – with a preview weekend just passing. From what I gather, since I didn’t get to play, it looks to be interesting but I’d never get to find out unless I play it. Sort of a WoW meets Dark Age of Camelot, with decent PvP. The problem with these games however, is that even though the PvP is ‘decent’, there usually is never anything worthwhile about it. Risk versus reward.

So with that, I am signed up for open beta, starting on September 7th. You can check it out from FilePlanet and get signed up if you have the exclusive FilePlanet account like all the cool kids do. So now I get to wait an excruciatingly painful 13 days before I can test this out. I’ll probably be sobbing like a bitch before I’m even through with the game, but it’s for the best.

I’m curious to hear from people who played this last weekend. Was it what you expected? Did the PvP make you cream? Was there anything remotely exciting about the “Keep Warfare”? Let me know.

I heard the combat is slow, and is more like an RTS than an RPG...

I'm in the Warhammer Online beta...

There is no real "PVP". Most, if not all of the action is "RVR" which pretty much consists of WoW Battleground-like encounters that you can queue up into from your first steps into the game.

You gain XP from player kills. That means immediately after creating your level 1 toon you can queue up and and level up strictly from only queuing RVR scenarios and trading kills with other players. Currently nothing like that exists in any other MMO.

On the end game areas of the map there are Keeps that exist that have multiple perks if you control them. There are NPCs in them that sell high level gear, for one. Secondly, if you control most of them your faction gets PVE and PVP bonuses to their stats as a whole. Also, if you control them ALL you have the opportunity to invade the opposing faction's City.

There are guild vs. guild keep sieges that include siege weapons and keep defenses. Basically, the game is geared towards massive player battles and not....ganking...or "risk vs. reward PVP", whatever you want to call it.

If you enjoyed WoW Battlegrounds and hated endgame PVE raiding I would say this game is for you. If you are looking for the next UO I would say look elsewhere.

Interesting..... I'm looking for another game and I'm currently in AC and plan on being there for awhile since I don't see any games that interest me in the future.
I do like a lot that I see/hear about WHO.
I WILL wait to see what transpires before I rush out and buy another game in HOPES that it will satisfy my needs......

Valid....

If you really want to have a better understanding of the game here are a couple youtube videos. That go into detail with the Mass Player Quests and Character Creation.

YouTube - Warhammer Online Shadow Warrior And Warrior Priest Gameplay

YouTube - Warhammer Online Public Quests Part 1 of 4

YouTube - Warhammer Online Character Creation

There is also some nice cinematic's and Developer videos at the main site:

Mythic Entertainment | Warhammer Online

Hopefully that's enough video/info to help you decide if its worth playing. personally I think its somewhat promising But I plan on trying out the Open Beta first. Before I make a commitment.

We had 30-40 harm join Destruction in Warhammer for the preview weekend. I was very surprised on how much I enjoyed the game. After the abortion that was AOC even checkers would be fun but it really was a good experience overall. Here are a few thoughts:

The game is very much DAOC meets WOW. If you liked either game to any extant you will like this one.

There is co death consequence. Face it those days are long gone. Some of the RVR zones however you have a very far walk back depending on where the battle was.

You cant go back to noob zones and kill people. The moment you go back one tier you turn into a chicken. The only instance of this I saw was several order high levels crossed a river which was a boundary of some sort and poof they were all chickens and I one shot them all.

Combat is like WOW but their seems to be more depth to it. Tanks can actually absorb damage for other players as an example. The classes are varied and all are interesting. I played 3 to level 10 and enjoyed them all.

Players drop loot. The best armor piece I had on my level 9 Witch elf I got from a player that I killed solo that was level 11.

Crafting was not fully implemented but I had a scavenge skill I trained that seemed very interesting. I was scavenging all kinds of what I would assume to be crafting materials of every kind from each corpse I ran across.

Sieges and RVR were downright amazing. The last night we grouped up everyone and headed out. Our first keep we attacked went down rather easily. The NPCs inside were tough but a 24 man group easily handled the 10 human defenders and the guard force. There was no mass respawn. The next keep fight was probably 200 people there. Boiling oil, seige weapons, battering rams the whole nine. The battle lasted 2 hours before Destruction prevailed. I had a few CTD during this seige but lag was tolerable.

The guild management system was incredible. Your guild actually levels as the players level within it. We got to Rank 9 out of 40 in 3 days. Each rank opens up a new guild management tool or item. Things like battle standards, a guild house with a flightmaster, an events calander ect... very cool.

Hope that helps. Would love to see JOV in the game. I ran into many of you in AOC both in JOV and oldschool JOV in other guilds. Hell Bob Barker was running BOX to my astonishment.

Se ya guys around!

Az

appreciate that review on WHO Aztek. If the game plays anything like what you just described at release it should be the closest to what players like most of us want in a game. Like was said above due to the AoC debacle im waiting a few month before I jump into anything new but hopefully WHO can keep a playerbase and make PvP fun again.

Once EA got its grubby hands on Warhammer Online I pretty much lost hope on the game. If there's a lot of hype after release I might consider trying it, but I'm not holding my breath on it. I think PC gaming in general is very stale right now and needs a serious kick in the rear.
